  1. The CW announced today that Arrow has been renewed for an eighth season. The long-running action drama is the network's longest-running superhero-based series, with its success helping pave the way for the likes of The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow.

Once a flagship of The CW, Arrow's ratings have tapered off over the years. But at nearly 150 episodes, that is to be expected. And yet, it still draws fairly good numbers for the network compared to its other prime time entries. Yearly crossover episodes with fellow DC series also help boost its viewership.

The CW has a total of five series on the air from the DC Comics universe. All four others were also picked up today. Fans can look forward to more The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Black Lightning in the 2019-2020 television season.

  2. The CW announced today that Legacies has been picked up for a second season. The rookie drama, which acts as a follow-up to The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, premiered last fall and is currently eight episodes into its run. Ratings thus far have been modest, though reviews have been generally favorable.

Legacies focuses on a group of young adults including Hope Mikaelson, the 17-year-old 'tribrid' daughter of Klaus and Hayley, and Lizzie and Josie Saltzman, Alaric Saltzman's twin girls. These young vampires, werewolves, and witches are coming of age in unconventional ways - on the road to becoming the heroes or villains they are meant to be.

Charmed follows sisters Mel and Maggie, whose worlds were shattered after the death of their mother. When they find out they have an older sister named Macy who their mother kept from them, the three sisters suddenly exhibit strange new abilities. They soon find out they are The Charmed Ones - powerful witches just like their mother was. And their new mission is to protect humankind from the demons that walk among them.

Look for Season 2 of Charmed this fall as part of the 2019-2020 television season.

  5. The CW announced today that The Flash has been renewed for a sixth season. The action drama continues to be one of the network's strongest-performing series, with ratings that consistently top its fellow superhero-based entries.

Currently in its fifth season, the series recently surpassed the 100-episode milestone - an impressive feat for a superhero-based TV show. Though fellow veteran Arrow, which premiered two years before The Flash, is just days away from reaching episode 150.

The Flash follows forensic scientist Barry Allen, who fights crime using his speedster abilities as The Flash, with help from his friends at Star Labs. Based on the DC comic, the series takes place in the same universe as fellow series Arrow, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow - all of which received renewals today for the 2019-2020 season. DC's Black Lightning was also picked up, though it does not crossover with the others.

  6. The CW announced today that DC's Legends of Tomorrow has been renewed for a fifth season. The superhero drama, which has continued to be a reliable and steady performer for the network on Monday nights, is currently in a mid-season break with the second-half of Season 4 returning in April.

Premiering in 2016 as an ensemble series featuring characters spun-off from Arrow and The Flash, the show takes place in the same shared DC Comics universe but with a time travel twist. While earlier seasons saw the legends taking part in crossover episodes with its sister shows, it has recently been staying in its own contained storylines.

The CW renewed all five of its DC superhero shows today, which means Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Black Lightningwill also be returning for the 2019-2020 television season.

  7. Showtime announced today during their TCA presentation that Shameless has been renewed for a tenth season. The pickup, which comes in the midst of Season 9, extends the cable drama's already-impressive run, which recently surpassed the 100-episode milestone.

The cable network's longest-running series, Shamelesscontinues to be creatively strong and draw solid viewership. Though after eight years on the air, its typically-consistent audience numbers could be showing signs of weakening. Multiple episodes this season have garnered less than 1 million viewers for the first time in its history.

William H. Macy stars in Shameless as a deadbeat alcoholic father of six children. He survives by relying on unlawful schemes while leaving his kids to fend for themselves. Long-time regular cast member Emmy Rossum will be leaving the series after Season 9, though the rest of the cast will be staying on.

Look for Season 10 of Shameless to premiere in late 2019.

  8. CBS announced today that FBI has been renewed for a second season. The early pickup comes in the midst of the procedural drama's freshman run.

The new series premiered last fall as part of the network's 2018-2019 lineup. After an impressive first few weeks, the network wasted no time in topping up its initial 13-episode run with a back-nine order for a full season's worth of 22.

The show's strong start has made it CBS' #1 new entry in the 2018-2019 season and a Top 10 broadcast series. While it comes up short against This is Us on Tuesdays at 9:00pm, ratings regularly best its other time slot competition.

From creator Dick Wolf, FBI takes an eye-opening look at the inner-workings of the New York office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, including the combination of skills, intellect, and cutting-edge technology used to keep the city and country safe.

  11. History confirmed today that Vikings will be coming to an end after its already-announced sixth season. The news comes well over a year since the veteran drama was last renewed, though a premiere date for its final run has yet to be announced.

The series has been a resounding success for the cable network. Since its debut in 2013 as History's first scripted original series, the show has been earning consistent critical acclaim while becoming a Top 5 drama on ad-supported cable with strong viewership in key demographics.

Inspired by the epic sagas about the trading and exploring Norsemen of early medieval Scandinavia, the Irish/Canadian co-production focuses on legendary Viking chieftain Ragnar Lodbrok, who was known for raiding France and England with his longships, and eventually becoming the king of Denmark and Sweden.

Vikings is currently airing its fifth season, with four episodes remaining until its season finale later this month on January 30. While production is said to be complete on its sixth and final season, a premiere date has yet to be penciled in.

While the end of Vikings is in sight, fans may be interested to learn that there is talk of a possible new series in the future from the same team that would continue the franchise. 14. CBS announced today that Elementary will close out its run after its already-ordered seventh season. The news comes just days after the long-running crime procedural filmed the final scene of its now-series finale.

Many saw the move coming, as the drama - at over 140 episodes - has recently felt like it was nearing the end of the road creatively. Its sixth season was also the first not to air in-season, instead being moved to the network's mid-season schedule where it aired from April through September.

Elementary stars Jonny Lee Miller as famed British detective Sherlock Holmes, who takes residence in New York in order to deal with his addiction issues. While there, he teams with Dr. Joan Watson and the two work as police consultants solving crimes around the city.

There is no time frame on when the show will return for its seventh and final 13-episode season, though some time in 2019 appears likely.

  16. Netflix cut back its superhero fare further today, cancelling Daredevil after three seasons. The somewhat surprising move comes the month after fellow Marvel entries Luke Cage and Iron Fist were also axed at the streaming service.

The reasons behind the recent cancellations are unknown, but appears clear that Netflix is making a visible effort to pare down on its Marvel-related original content. Moving forward, just two active series remain from the comic imprint: Jessica Jones and The Punisher. It is not clear if the Daredevil character will make any appearances in either of the other shows' upcoming seasons, but a statement from the streamer mentioned that the character will live on in future projects for Marvel.

Daredevil premiered back in 2015 as the first Marvel superhero series on the streaming service. It was an immediate hit, with critics and audiences alike praising its gritty atmosphere, engaging story, and exciting action. Its success paved the way for the four aforementioned series, with each earning multiple seasons of their own.

Daredevil followed attorney Matt Murdock, who was blinded as a boy in a tragic accident that also left him with extraordinary senses. Now with his law practice setup in his old New York neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen, Matt works as a respected lawyer by day and assumes the identity of the masked vigilante known as Daredevil at night.

  17. ABC announced today that Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been given an early pickup for a seventh season. The good news comes just six months after the drama was renewed for Season 6, which itself isn't due to air until 2019.

The veteran series premiered in 2013 and is the longest-running show set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At over 100 episodes, its lengthy run has been impressive and looks to continue for at least the next couple of years. Like most shows of this age, its current ratings leave a lot to be desired, but its core audience still tunes in in decent enough numbers to keep it going in its Friday night time slot, where it moved last season from its regular Tuesday spot.

The network has ordered 13 episodes for Season 7 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., matching its Season 6 order. The new shortened run format is down considerably from the 22 episodes the show aired in Seasons 1 through 5.

  18. It is being reported that CBS All Access will not be ordering a second season of One Dollar. The news does not come as much of a surprise, as the mystery thriller never really generated any substantial buzz despite garnering fairly positive critical praise.

The streaming series was set in a post-recession rust-belt American town, where a one-dollar bill changing hands connected a group of people involved in a shocking multiple murder. The path of the bill paints a picture of a modern American town with deep divides among culture and class that rear their heads as the town's secrets are revealed.

With today's move, One Dollar becomes the first scripted series on CBS All Access to be cancelled. Its latest drama, Tell Me a Story, is awaiting news on its future.

  22. ABC has topped up the first season of The Rookie, adding an additional seven episodes to its original order of 13. That gives the cop drama a total of 20 episodes, which is enough to be considered a full season.

Just three weeks into its run, the hour-long series got a late start to the season with a mid-October premiere. Early reviews have been mostly positive, though ratings have not fared quite as well. While drawing a decent-sized audience, the show has been trailing its 10:00pm Tuesday time slot competition in both total viewers and the adults 18-49 demographic.

The Rookie is led by Nathan Fillion, best known for his seven-year turn on Castle. He plays John Nolan, a middle aged man who experiences a life-changing incident that inspires him to pursue his dream of being an officer for the Los Angeles Police Department. But as the force's oldest rookie, he must deal with skepticism from senior officers and the demands of keeping up with not only the criminals, but the younger cops in the precinct.

It is not clear if the Luke Cage or Iron Fist characters will make any appearances in the other shows' upcoming seasons.
