  1. It is being reported that Magnum P.I. has been added to the list of new shows to receive a full season order from CBS. The network has topped up its freshman run with an unspecified number of episodes, said to be somewhere in the range of seven.

The new series, which is an updated take on the classic 1980s action drama, premiered in late September and has been a decent performer on Monday nights through its first four episodes. Critical reception has been mixed, with some reviewers unsure of its ability to live up to its source material.

Magnum P.I. follows security consultant Thomas Magnum, who works as a private investigator in Hawaii making a name for himself by taking cases nobody else will. Along with help from a team of fellow vets, Magnum utilizes his military skills to make a name for himself while on all sorts of sun-drenched adventures.

  2. It is being reported that Netflix has cancelled Marvel's Iron Fist after two seasons. The sad news comes a month following the release of the drama's sophomore run. The show aired a total of 23 episodes.

Iron Fist was the fourth Marvel series on the streaming service and is the first of the five currently airing to get the axe. The news is not completely surprising, as critics and viewers had mixed reactions to it from the start. Issues from a rocky first season appeared to be at least partially-addressed in Season 2, but alas the consensus only mildly improved.

The series follows presumed-dead billionaire Danny Rand, who survived a plane crash only to mysteriously return to New York fifteen years later in order to connect with his past. Only now, his body is a living weapon with a mastery of kung fu and the ability to summon a power known as the Iron Fist. When a long-destined enemy emerges, Rand must choose between reclaiming his family's legacy and his duty to fight the criminal element as the Iron Fist.

  3. Fox today topped up the sophomore season of The Resident, ordering an additional nine episodes to bring its total to 22 - a full season's worth. The good news comes three episodes into the current season, which is so far off to a solid start.

The medical drama premiered early this year as a mid-season entry with a 14-episode run. After a strong showing, the network opted to move it into its regular fall lineup for the 2018-2019 season. The move appears to be paying off thus far, as the show has been garnering consistent viewership in its Monday night time slot with ratings on-par with what it brought in during Season 1.

The Resident stars Matt Czuchry as a senior resident and Emily VanCamp as a nurse practitioner at Chastain Park Memorial Hospital. The series brings to light the hard truths about modern-day medicine - both good and bad. Some lives are saved while others are lost, but expectations will always be shattered.

  4. One week after its freshman finale, The Outpost has been renewed for Season 2. The fantasy adventure drama debuted this summer with little buzz, airing 10 episodes that garnered mixed reviews.

The series follows Talon, a Blackblood whose whole village was destroyed by a gang of mercenaries years ago. Now the only remaining member of her race, she travels to a lawless fortress on the edge of civilization looking for her family's killer. On her way to the outpost, Talon learns that she possesses a supernatural power that she must harness in order to save herself and defend the world against a radical religious dictator.

Look for Season 2 of Outpost in the summer of 2019.

  5. It's official: Veronica Mars is returning to television. Hulu has ordered eight new episodes of the detective series with star Kristen Bell on-board to reprise her role as the titular character. A premiere is expected sometime in 2019.

The noir mystery drama first premiered 14 years ago, airing three seasons on UPN and The CW before being cancelled in 2007. While never a ratings standout, the series did amass a loyal fan base who, in 2013, helped fund a feature film via a Kickstarter campaign that accumulated over $5 million.

Created by Rob Thomas, Veronica Mars follows a young private investigator in the seaside town of Neptune, California. In the revival, Veronica is hired to investigate the recent murders of spring breakers in the community. The case will play out over the course of the season, with Neptune's wealthy elite butting heads with the working class folk, who feel the financial impact the murders are having on tourism.

  6. NBC announced today that it is increasing its order for Brooklyn Nine-Nine, adding five episodes to the comedy's debut outing on the network. Slated for a mid-season run in 2018-2019, the half-hour series will now air a total of 18 episodes rather than the originally-planned 13.

It was back in May that the network saved the series just one day after it was cancelled by Fox after five seasons. Though the quick revival came as somewhat of a surprise, the move to NBC does make sense, as the network had originally expressed interest in the show back in 2012 while it was searching for a home.

Led by Saturday Night Live alum Andy Samberg, Brooklyn Nine-Nine follows an offbeat group of detectives and staff at the 99th precinct of the New York Police Department. Samberg plays the eclectic Jake Peralta, a talented but immature detective whose carefree style clashes with his stern, by-the-books captain, played by Andre Braugher.

  7. It's official: Designated Survivor will be returning for a third season. The cancelled political drama has been revived by Netflix with a 10-episode order for next year. The surprise announcement comes after a prolonged negotiation effort between the streaming service and the show's Canadian-based production company, Entertainment One.

The Kiefer Sutherland-led series premiered in 2016 on ABC and was one of the network's best-performing new entries of the season, attracting a healthy audience and even picking up a Critics' Choice award. The initial interest didn't last long, though, as its numbers dipped in Season 2 after the show's main plot wrapped up. The decline in viewership resulted in its eventual cancellation back in May.

When the series returns on Netflix in 2019, look for the plot to pick up where it left off, with President Kirkman campaigning for re-election. Along with Sutherland, key cast members Italia Ricci, Kal Penn, and Adan Canto are also set to return. One notable change going forward will be another new showrunner - its fifth overall. Replacing the departing Keith Eisner will be Neal Baer, who has done work on ER, Law & Order: SVU, and Under the Dome.

Designated Survivor is Sutherland's first return as a lead in a TV series since his career-reviving role as Jack Bauer in Fox's 24franchise. In the show he plays a Cabinet member who is unexpectedly thrust into the role of President of the United States after a bombing at the Capitol kills a number of key government figures. After being sworn in as President, he starts to learn that the catastrophic attack was only the beginning of a much larger plan.

  8. It is being reported that Mr. Robot will be coming to an end after its already-announced fourth season. The news comes more than eight months since the drama was picked up for Season 4, along with word that fans will be waiting until 2019 for new episodes to return.

The cable drama will be ending a run that was never considered a ratings success, but one that garnered plenty of praise from both critics and its core fan base. Despite its small audience, USA Network stuck with series, likely valuing the fact that it picked up its share of awards, including a win for Best Drama at the 2016 Golden Globes.

Mr. Robot follows a young, anti-social programmer who works as a cyber-security engineer during the day but spends his nights as a vigilante hacker. He finds himself in a quandary when the anarchist leader of an underground hacker group recruits him to take down the powerful corporations that he believes are running, and ruining, the world.

While the series is coming to a close, fans can take solace in the fact that today's news comes well in advance of Season 4. The early notice will give its writers time to craft a suitable ending that will provide loyal fans with some much-deserved closure. USA Network has not been as kind to other serialized shows recently with the sudden axing of both Colony and Shooter this summer.

  9. CBS announced today that The Big Bang Theory will come to an end after its upcoming 12th season. The news will see the veteran series sign off next May as one of the most-successful prime time comedies of all time.

Since its premiere in 2007, The Big Bang Theory has been winning over audiences and garnering critical acclaim like few other comedies have. More viewers have tuned into the show since 2010 than any other comedy on television, and it consistently leads the ratings among many key demographics.

By the time its all over, the show will have aired a total of 279 episodes and rank as the longest-running multi-camera sitcom in TV history. It also picked up dozens of awards over the years from the likes of The Emmys, The Golden Globes, The People's Choice Awards, and many others.

A joint statement was released from WBTV, CBS, and Chuck Lorre Productions stating, "We are forever grateful to our fans for their support of The Big Bang Theory during the past twelve seasons. We, along with the cast, writers and crew, are extremely appreciative of the show's success and aim to deliver a final season, and series finale, that will bring The Big Bang Theory to an epic creative close."

  10. Five months after limited series The Alienist concluded its run, TNT has ordered another chapter to continue the story. Titled The Angel of Darkness, the sequel will be based on the follow-up novel of the same name by author Caleb Carr.

Set in 1896 New York, The Alienist followed a criminal psychologist and a newspaper illustrator who are tasked by the city's newly-appointed police commissioner to investigate a string of gruesome murders in secret. Its 10-episode run fared well for the cable network, garnering solid ratings and picking up multiple Emmy Award nominations.

The three series leads, Daniel Bruhl, Luke Evans, and Dakota Fanning, will all be returning for The Angel of Darkness, which will likely premiere in early 2019.

  11. History announced this week that Knightfall has been renewed for a second season. The freshman series, which premiered last December, is one of two original dramas currently in the cable network's lineup.

The show's 10-episode debut run drew a solid audience, reaching 25 million total viewers (Live+7), ranking it as the season's #3 new cable drama among total viewers. While overall reviews were mixed, it did pick up a Saturn Award nomination in the category of Best Fantasy Television Series.

Knightfall follows the Knights Templar - a powerful and mysterious military order of the Middle Ages entrusted to protect Christianity's precious relics. Taking place years after the fall of the city of Acre, the last stronghold in the Holy Land, a clue emerges suggesting the whereabouts of the lost Holy Grail. This sends the Templars on a dangerous mission to find the lost Cup of Christ.

Joining the cast for Season 2 will be Mark Hamill, who is set to play a battle-hardened Knight Templar veteran of the Crusades tasked to train the new initiates to the Order. A new showrunner, Aaron Helbing, has also come aboard as an executive producer.

  12. It is being reported that USA Network has cancelled Shooterafter three seasons. The Ryan Phillippe drama, currently airing new episodes on Thursday nights, will air its series finale on September 13.

It has been an interesting, but not unsuccessful, run for the series, which faced its share of setbacks over the course of its time on the air. Issues first arose even before its debut episode, originally scheduled for the summer of 2016, when tragic real-life shootings delayed its summer release plans twice, resulting in an eventual fall premiere. Then in its second season, Phillippe broke his leg in an off-set mishap in the midst of production, resulting in the season being capped at eight episodes rather than its original order of 10.

The show proved that it could weather adversity, though, as it went on to become the cable network's top new series in 2016. Its solid performance continued with another solid run in Season 2, resulting in a 13-episode order for Season 3, making it the show's longest season yet. Its momentum could not be sustained, however, with ratings taking a substantial hit this time around. That resulted in it becoming USA's lowest-rated drama in the 18-49 demographic, making a Season 4 impossible.

Based on novels by Stephen Hunter and the 2007 film of the same name, Shooter follows the life of Bob Lee Swagger, an expert marksman trained in counter intelligence who is now living in exile. After learning of a plot to kill the president, the highly-decorated sniper re-emerges for duty, only to learn he has been double-crossed in an operation that has ties to his past.

  13. Hulu announced today that Castle Rock has been picked up for a second season. The good news comes midway through the show's freshman run, which premiered last month with new episodes currently streaming every Wednesday.

The psychological horror drama is the latest original series in the streamer's lineup and has been faring well since its launch. Critics have praised its storytelling and well-rounded cast, and Hulu says that the show's July 25 debut ranks as its most-consumed original premiere ever.

Based on various characters and settings from Stephen King's novels, Castle Rock combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of the author's works, weaving together a saga of light and darkness that plays out in the Maine town of Castle Rock. Being an anthology, each season of the show will be a self-contained story.

  14. FX confirmed today that Fargo will be returning for a fourth season. And while fans of the critically-acclaimed drama will surely be happy with the news of its return, they may not be too happy with the wait involved until it comes back.

The cable network has given a fall 2019 time frame for when production will likely begin, which means a 2020 premiere is probable. Season 3 aired last spring, so that will be at least three years in between seasons.

Some new information on Season 4 has been unveiled, the biggest of which is that Chris Rock has been cast in a lead role as the head of a crime family. The setting will be Kansas City, Missouri in the year 1950, as two families - Italians migrating from Italy and African Americans fleeing the south - collide, with each fighting for a piece of the American dream.

  15. FX has confirmed that a tenth season has been ordered for American Horror Story. The pickup is an early one, as the anthology series - already renewed through Season 9 - has yet to return for Season 8.

Co-created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, the veteran series continues to captivate audiences, though some installments have been met with decidedly mixed reviews. Still, the franchise remains one of the cable network's top performers and is usually in the conversation come awards season.

Production is currently underway on Season 8 of American Horror Story, which is slated to premiere on September 12. Titled Apocalypse, the upcoming season will feature a crossover of past installments Murder House and Coven.

The show is expected to keep its one-season-per-year schedule going forward, with Season 9 expected in 2019 and Season 10 in 2020.

  16. Just over a month after NBC broke the hearts of #Clockblockers by cancelling Timeless for a second time, it has been confirmed that the show will indeed be returning for a two-part series finale.

The news will surely delight fans of the time travel drama, who were left hanging after a major cliffhanger at the end of its sophomore run. At the time of its cancellation, there were rumors of a possible return to properly wrap up its story but the likelihood of it actually happening was unknown.

Timeless premiered in 2016 with a good amount of momentum behind it. Created by two veteran producers, the series was given a high profile time slot on Monday nights along with heavy promotion. While it was well-received by critics, a solid start in the ratings was not long-lasting, and the show was cancelled for the first time at the end of its freshman run.

NBC eventually had a change of heart and decided to bring the show back for a second season, but its sophomore numbers only further declined. It wasn't much of a surprise when the network cancelled the show once again, but fans were nonetheless upset. And while a third season will not be happening, this two-part finale will provide at least a sense of closure.

Look for the Timeless series finale to air sometime during the holiday season.

The zombie drama, which began as a companion series to The Walking Dead, has continued to be a solid performer for the cable network. While its current viewership numbers aren't what they were in its earlier days, more overall viewers have been tuning into its fourth-season compared to the same point in Season 3.

The series underwent some significant changes for Season 4, staring with bringing in a new showrunner duo who have changed its overall tone and storytelling style. Gone are most of the original cast, with many newcomers now taking the lead. The first crossover with The Walking Dead has also taken place, with Morgan joining as a series regular.

  18. Amazon Studios confirmed today that Sneaky Pete has been renewed for a third season. The good news was delivered at this summer's TCA, with the streaming giant announcing that production on the upcoming season will be kicking off next week.

It was more or less already understood that the drama would be returning for a third season, when a few months ago it was announced that its production would be moving from New York to California due to a tax credit approval it received on the west coast.

Co-created by Bryan Cranston, Sneaky Pete stars Giovanni Ribisi as a con man who is on the run from a dangerous gangster. Recently released from jail, he assumes the identity of his prison cellmate and reunites with the man's family in order to stay hidden from his past.

  19. Netflix announced today that Altered Carbon has been renewed for a second season. The good news comes nearly six months after the release of its 10-episode freshman run, which garnered a generally positive reception for both audiences and critics.

Based on novels by Richard K. Morgan, the science fiction drama takes place hundreds of years in the future, in a society that has been transformed by technology in completely new ways. Human bodies are interchangeable and consciousness can be digitized and transferred from body to body, making death a temporary inconvenience.

Takeshi Kovacs, played by Joel Kinnaman in Season 1, is the lone surviving soldier in a group of elite interstellar warriors who were defeated in an uprising against the new world order. His mind was imprisoned for centuries until an immensely-wealthy and long-lived man offers him the chance to live again.

For Season 2, Anthony Mackie has already been cast to take over the lead role of Takeshi Kovacs from Kinnaman. Because of the nature of the source material, which follows Takeshi's journey across hundreds of years and in many different bodies, the re-casting was somewhat expected.

The streaming giant has ordered eight episodes for Season 2 of Altered Carbon, which is down from the 10 it received in Season 1. Look for a return in 2019.

  20. Just four episodes into its freshman run, Paramount Network has announced that Yellowstone has been picked up for a second season. The good news reflects a solid start to the new drama, which become the cable network's most-watched original scripted series after averaging 2.8 million viewers (live+same day) for its 2-hour premiere.

Yellowstone follows the Dutton family, who are owners of a Montana ranch that is the largest of its kind in America. But through it all, they relentlessly fight to keep their land in the family.

10 episodes have been ordered for Season 2 of Yellowstone, which will return in 2019.

  21. At this weekend's San Diego Comic-Con panel for The Man in the High Castle, it was announced that the streaming drama will be returning for a fourth season. The good news was also accompanied by the long-awaited premiere date for Season 3, which is now confirmed to hit Amazon Video on October 5.

The Man in the High Castle is an original production of the streaming service and has become one of its more popular and critically-acclaimed offerings. Loosely-based on the 1962 Philip K. Dick novel of the same name, the dystopian drama takes place in an alternate history where the United States has lost World War II and is now partitioned into three zones: a Japanese-occupied west coast, a Nazi-controlled east coast, and a neutral buffer zone that separates the two.

No return date has been set for Season 4, but a premiere in the second half of 2019 appears likely.

  22. It appears as if Colony has been cancelled after three seasons. The sad news comes just days before the sci-fi drama's season finale - which will now serve as its series ender.

The writing appeared to be on the wall when fans noticed a lack of representation at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, where the show has been known to have a regular presence. A tweet by Wes Tooke, who wrote numerous episodes each season, expressed sadness that they won't be able to finish their story.

The series had a solid run on USA Network, at one time ranking as cable television's most-watched scripted series on Thursday nights. Viewership has tapered off, however, with Season 3 hitting series lows that were obviously not up to the network's expectations.

Set in the near future where Los Angeles becomes occupied by outside invaders, Colony follows a former FBI agent and his wife as they risk everything to protect their family and bring liberty back to the people of earth.

  25. It is being reported that History has cancelled Six after two seasons. The Navy SEAL drama is currently in the midst of its sophomore run, with four episodes remaining until its now-series finale in early August.

The show premiered early last year and had a solid debut outing, airing eight episodes that delivered strong ratings for the cable network. Season 2, however, has not fared as well. Viewership through its first six episodes if off by nearly half compared to Season 1, making it difficult to warrant a third season pickup.

Inspired by true events, Six takes place in the high stakes world of the elite Navy Special Operations unit known as SEAL Team Six. Its members are tasked with the covert mission of eliminating a Taliban leader in Afghanistan, but the mission goes awry when they discover that a U.S. citizen is working with the terrorists.
