James Dean was an American actor and his destiny as a cultural icon was insured by his untimely death. Always the thrill-seeker, Dean had recently purchased a Porsche 550 racecar. While driving it to a race in Salinas, California (and shortly after receiving a speeding ticket), Dean collided head-on with a car that had crossed into his lane. Dean had starred in only three movies before he died; his most famous, Rebel without a Cause, came out a month after his death and was a huge hit. Yet with the untimely deaths of his Rebel co-stars, Sal Mineo (bizarre stabbing in 1976) and Natalie Wood (bizarre drowning in 1981) many wonder if that famous movie is truly cursed. He died September 30, 1955 at the age of 24.
