Total solar eclipses, like the one seen last month in NorthAmerica, allow us to see details of the Sun that can't be seenat any other time. So, this month, The Sky at Night teamlooks at how scientists are creating eclipses on demand anddiscovering the secrets that can be revealed hidden in thatstarlight, including habitable planets like our own.MaggieAderin-Pocock goes to Belgium, where the European SpaceAgency's Proba-3 mission is going through its final testingstages. This ground-breaking mission aims to fly two satellitestogether in formation, with one satellite acting like the Moonduring an eclipse, blocking out the central light of the Sun.This allows the other satellite to image the corona, the Sun'souter atmosphere as seen during an eclipse. Maggie meets DrDamien Galano from ESA, who tells her all about the challengesof the mission and what it hopes to achieve. Maggie then goeson to meet satellite operations test engineer Marie Beeckman, who takes her up close to the satellites to find out how thetesting is going.Meanwhile Pete Lawrence is out and about inBristol, meeting a team of scientists and amateur astronomers. He discovers how input from the amateurs was crucial to thediscovery of two exoplanets colliding, which had caused thedimming of a star. Finally, Chris Lintott is in Glasgow meetingProfessor Beth Biller from Edinburgh University to discover whyit is only by creating eclipses of distant stars, that wecould potentially find exoplanets more like our own.And as everour resident astronomer, Pete Lawrence, will be guiding usthrough what can be seen this coming month, with a particularfocus on the rewards of viewing in daylight – but as always,he will be reminding us of the need to take care when doingthis.

  17. The CW announced today that Arrow has been renewed for a 6th season. The veteran action drama is the network's longest-running superhero-based series, with its success paving the way for spin-offs like The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. With Supergirl recently joining the fold in its move from CBS, The CW now has four series set in the same DC Comics universe, giving them the ability to have characters appear across multiple shows in occasional crossover episodes. Along with Arrow, The CW also renewed its four other returning fall dramas today. Picked up for the 2017-2018 season are The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, and Supernatural. As for the network's freshman entries, No Tomorrow and Frequency were absent from today's list of renewed shows. They likely will not be returning for a second season, but we won't know for sure until May.

The Sky at Night in the Multiverse of Mystery is a magicaljourney into the far-flung ideas at the very edge of scientificknowledge, exploring the concepts that today seem like sciencefiction but may one day become science fact.Delving into thearchive at the Royal Society, we look at the dreamers whofirst considered the possibility of travelling to the moon andblack holes long before they could be proven to exist. Fromthere, the team explore some ideas and theories that todaycould be dismissed as fanciful thinking. They imagine a worldwhere a popular TV programme asks two scientists, HiranyaPeiris and Emma Chapman, to meet, have dinner and talkscience, all under the watchful eye of maître d' PeteLawrence.Meanwhile, Maggie Aderin-Pocock sails off to explorethe realities of interstellar travel and astrobiologist DougVakoch explains some of the challenges of communicating withaliens. Astrophysicist Becky Smethurst is lost in a world ofblack and white holes, and Chris Lintott, as you have neverseen him before, argues the case for a multiverse.Along withanimation from the BBC Ideas team, this edition of The Sky atNight shines a very different light on the world ofastrophysics.
