After Martin and Louisa tell Dr Timoney (Emily Bevan) abouttheir failed date night, she questions their ultimatecompatibility. She asks them if it is time they recognise thatperhaps they are not meant to be together: something for themto go and think about. Martin has new neighbours: Ericathe new art teacher at Portwenn school has moved in with herdaughter, Bernie. Though Louisa is happy to finally have founda permanent teacher, this proves to be short-lived when Ericawants to try out some rather alternative ideas on the children.PC Penhale (John Marquez) manages to protect everyoneafter a car accident outside the school, and Louisa is verysurprised when the victim of the crash turns out to be DrTimoney. Penhale is happy to finally have his crimestopping talents recognised, but is confused when he isoffered a transfer to Exeter, particularly as this will meanleaving Janice behind, even though he hasn't quite managed toask her out yet. Martin discovers that his new neighbouris both noisy and rather accident prone, and thinks nothing ofcalling on the doctor next door. Bert (Ian McNeice), hiswhisky dream now in tatters, decides to go back to somethinghe knows, and becomes a handyman. But even this doesn't reallyprove worthwhile, when his first customer, Erica, has anaccident, and he has to call Martin in to help. Louisa andMartin are intrigued when Dr Timoney invites them for anadditional therapy session – she might just have worked outan answer to the question of their relationship. And anAmerican tourist seeks help from the Doc.

Martin and Louisa don't seem to be having much success withtheir therapy, so Dr Timoney (Emily Bevan) advises that theyshould try and take things back to the beginning of theirrelationship, and plan a date, and try not to let their busylives get in the way, even though Louisa is also trying toplan James Henry's first birthday party. A last minuterequest from Danny (Tristan Sturrock), Louisa's ex-boyfriend,brings him and seven children from London camping on Ruth'sfarm, supervised by Al(Joe Absolom) and Bert (Ian McNeice),but they need some children from a local school to show themaround: Louisa feels she has to help her old friend out, eventhough this further adds to her load. Martin is not at allpleased when Danny proceeds to try and intervene in theirtroubled relationship. Things are going slightly betterfor Mrs Tishell (Selina Cadell) and Clive (Malcolm Storry),though Clive worries that he will not be able to keep up, whenMrs. Tishell invites him back into the bedroom, withdisastrous consequences. Things don't start off too badlyfor Martin and Louisa at the restaurant, but when Danny callssaying one of his children, Jake, has gone missing, datenight is effectively over. When they finally find Jake, theyalso find Bert's whisky still, and PC Penhale (John Marquez)is keen to lay down the law to Bert. Martin and Louisa areleft wondering if anything will ever go right for them, whenMartin uncovers a health scare at James's party, that makesall the guests leave very quickly: not even Ruth's (Dame EileenAtkins) birthday cake can keep them there.
