Williamson is working on a project that could be a "companion series" to "TVD," The CW's most-watched show. Deadline describes the new show as "'The X-Files' meets 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'" and says it revolves around people who track unexplained phenomena. (So, more "X-Files" than "Buffy," based on that logline.) The rather large catch at the moment is that Williamson hasn't actually written a script yet, and The CW hasn't committed to anything. Williamson may co-write it with fellow "Vampire Diaries" creator Julie Plec. "Companion series," by the way, doesn't mean "spinoff." That's TV-exec-speak for a show that people think might be a good match with "TVD" on The CW's schedule. Williamson signed a development deal with Warner Bros. earlier this month. The paranormal project is the first thing he's gotten rolling under the contract.

CBS has signed the star to a talent holding deal, meaning he will headline a new project set for next fall. Sources say the actor was offered the deal the same day The CW decided to not give "Life Unexpected" a full-season order. Polaha is thus far the only dramatic actor on CBS' roster this pilot season. [Deadline] "Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice" creator Shonda Rhimes is creating a new series for ABC set in the world of public relations crisis management. The show will be based on the career of legendary public relations consultant Judy Smith, who worked with Bill Clinton, Michael Vick and New York Governor David Paterson. Not much is known about the project (it doesn't have a title yet), other than it is being developed for the 2011-12 season and will revolve around the life and work of a PR pro and her dysfunctional team. [Vulture] "Lost" alum Doug Hutchinson (he played Horace Goodspeed) is heading to Lie To Me. The actor will guest star as Lane Bradley, whose rising career as a police detective comes to a screeching halt when his infant daughter is kidnapped. Bradley is described as an intense individual who is controlling of his wife and son and blames his wife for the kidnapping, but he naturally has a few secrets of his own. The episode, "Gone Baby Gone," will air later this season. [Movieline]

The New York Post says the show's high-tech stunts went "completely awry," including wires dropping on the audience, scenery missing pieces and the show's star Natalie Mendoza was suspended helplessly in midair during the climatic end to Act I. As Mendoza finished the number "Rise Above" while suspended over the audience, a wire malfunction left her there -- for seven or eight minutes, while stagehands worked to figure out the problem. In the first act alone, the show was halted four times for technical difficulties. At one point, Spider-Man himself (Reeve Carney) was left dangling above the stage as backstage crew members leapt at his feet to haul him back down to earth. The theatergoers left the performance grumbling about feeling like "guinea pigs" and that the show felt like a "dress rehearsal." This was the first preview performance, with an official opening night set for Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011. Hopefully the snafus can be worked out before then. Franco and Hathaway each have a movie out right now, Franco's "127 Hours" and Hathaway's "Love and Other Drugs." Both films have been getting good reviews. Franco has even been in the conversation for an Oscar nomination, while Hathaway is considered more of a long shot. It would certainly be a different way to go from last year's hosts of Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin. But after our initial surprise, we found ourselves liking the idea. Franco would certainly be a breath of fresh air, while Hathaway has proven her comedic chops in movies like "The Princess Diaries" and "The Devil Wears Prada." Hathaway would be the first female host since Ellen DeGeneres in Feb. 2006 and only the third female host since 1987 (Whoopi Goldberg being the other one). What do you think? Nielsen died late Sunday afternoon (Nov. 28) of complications from pneumonia at a hospital near his home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., his family says. His wife and "dear friends" were by his side. Nielsen's career spans some six decades, beginning with appearances in live TV dramas in the early 1950s. He made his feature film debut in the 1956 sci-fi classic "Forbidden Planet" and worked steadily through the 1960s and '70s in both film and television. His movie credits from that time include "Tammy and the Bachelor" (1957), "The Plainsman" (1966) and "The Poseidon Adventure" (1972), and he appeared on numerous TV shows ranging from "Peyton Place" to "The Streets of San Francisco." Prior to "Airplane!," the bulk of Nielsen's work had been in dramas, but directors Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker wanted someone who could play things absolutely straight in the midst of their anarchic comedy. Nielsen fit the bill perfectly, delivering line after memorable line in "Airplane!" without the slightest wink to the audience -- which only made them funnier. He re-teamed with Abrahams and the Zucker brothers in 1982 for the short-lived series "Police Squad!," which parodied the stolid cop shows of the era (some of which Nielsen had previously guest-starred on) with the same brilliance. The show lasted only six episodes, though it did earn Nielsen an Emmy nomination for best actor in a comedy series. His character, Frank Drebin, would live on in three "Naked Gun" movies beginning in 1988. He continued his comedy career in later films like "Spy Hard" and "Dracula: Dead and Loving It," and more recently he played the president in the third and fourth "Scary Movies." A recent update on PostSecret, the addictive site where people anonymously share their secrets via postcard, claims that one of the male cast members of the Harry Potter movies is the unknowing father of a child. The postcard (above) features pictures of Jason Isaacs, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Oliver and James Phelps, Tom Felton and Alan Rickman and the following handwritten text: "One of these men is the father of the most amazing little girl in the world. He's never met her, he never will. He probably can't even remember my name." Felton, 23, and the Phelps twins, 24, took to Twitter to laugh off the postcard. Wrote Felton after sharing a Twitpic of the postcard: "My friend just found this on the web! just to confirm that I can be cancelled out of this equation lol!" James Phelps ("To clear things up, this isn't me. Funny, but nothing to do with me") and Oliver Phelps ("Apart from making me laugh, i can honestly say its 100% not me") offered similar sentiments. Can any of us really predict how we'd act under such extreme circumstances? In Sunday's (Nov. 28) episode "Wildfire," Shane (Jon Bernthal) considers breaking at least one of the Commandments -- on top of the whole "commit adultery" and "coveting thy neighbor's wife" ones, anyway. So yeah, Shane apparently has coveting issues. He's coveting Rick's (Andrew Lincoln) family hard, and killing him with friendly fire could be the answer to regaining that makeshift family Shane once had. It's pretty sad, really. Shane, not to prey on the weak, but Andrea (Laurie Holden) just lost her sister. Instead of trying to steal someone's family, why not try to offer support where it's needed? She's also single. Because what comes next is three months of nothing -- and recent TV history has not been kind to shows that go off the air for a substantial length of time in-season. After Monday's episode, "The Event" will go away for three months before returning Feb. 28 for a 12-week run to conclude the season. (New drama The Cape will fill the 9 p.m. Monday spot in January and February.) We get at least some of NBC's thinking in giving it the break -- serialized shows like "The Event" don't tend to repeat well, and the network can use its late-season NFL games (including the first round of the playoffs) to hype "The Cape" and hope people tune in. But it's also a pretty big risk to take "The Event" off for that long. "Lost" and "24" had some issues when they followed traditional scheduling patterns in their early seasons, but ABC and FOX eventually figured out how to run them in mostly unbroken blocks. And last season, ABC tried the long-hiatus gambit with two shows -- V and FlashForward -- and it didn't really work in either case. "FlashForward" is the more apples-to-apples comparison with "The Event." ABC aired 10 episodes of the show last fall, then put it on a three-month-plus hiatus before returning it to the schedule in mid-March. Like NBC's show, "FlashForward's" ratings had shown a downward trend (though not as steep as "The Event's" has been) in the fall, and after the return, its numbers tailed off even more. "FlashForward's" first episode back in the spring drew 6.6 million same-day viewers, which wasn't a huge dip from the 7.3 million who watched the final fall episode. Two weeks later, however, the show was barely above 5 million viewers, and it stayed there pretty much through the end of the season. "V" only aired four episodes last fall before its long break, but its audience also eroded in the spring. The first episode back drew 7.3 million same-day viewers, compared to 9.2 million in its final fall installment. (ABC did, however, renew it for a second season, which debuts in January.) By giving "The Event" such a long break, NBC will effectively have to mount two marketing campaigns for it -- and the second one will have an even bigger task than the first one. Not only will the network have to remind people who've been loyal to the show so far that it's coming back, but it will also try to convince viewers who have spent 10 weeks not watching the show that it's worth it to join in midstream. We have to wonder if, rather than giving "The Event" a three-month hiatus, restarting the show in January and having it run through late March wouldn't serve the show better. Its same-day ratings are pretty meager (though it is one of the more heavily DVR'd shows on TV this season), and it's hard to envision them improving much after such a long break. Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, Caprica has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season. The remaining first run episodes of Caprica will be removed from the schedule as of next Tuesday, November 2. The final 5 eps will be re-scheduled to air at a to be announced time in the first quarter of 2011, & will conclude the run of the series. TNT has cancelled exec producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s Dark Blue, the show about a group of undercover cops starring Dylan McDermott, according to Variety. Blue had not performed well for TNT in its second season, averaging 2.2 million viewers per episode. Though the freshman comedy has not been officially canceled, the network’s decision to not order additional episodes is concerning — this could mean Wilde might be running off the air sometime soon. The show had been suffering in the ratings: Two weeks ago, the series attracted just 2.9 million viewers. If only Allison had seen this coming: CBS has cut 'Medium's' season 7 episode order to 13 episodes. Is this it for Allison DuBois? According to Deadline Hollywood, CBS has not canceled the Patricia Arquette series -- yet. Its keeping all options open. The series about a mom of three who can speak to the dead has done well in syndication on Lifetime and is averaging more than 6 million viewers on Fridays at 8PM. This isn't the first time 'Medium' has faced danger. The series originated on NBC, but was almost perpetually on the bubble. Its last season on NBC averaged 8.45 million viewers. When NBC canceled it, CBS scooped it up and paired it with 'Ghost Whisperer' on Fridays. During season 6, 'Medium' aired Fridays at 9PM ET and averaged 7.79 million viewers. CBS played a similar game with 'Numb3rs,' another Friday drama. The network cut its episode order to 13 before canceling it last May. The news was confirmed on Twitter by co-executive producer KristieAnne Reed. “ABC gave us the word,” she tweeted. “We will only make 13 episodes of The Whole Truth.” The drama only averaged 5.3 million viewers (ranked No. 69 among all primetime shows) and a 1.5 rating/4 share among adults 18-49 (ranked No. 72). It’s unclear how many of Truth‘s remaining unaired episodes will see the light of day; an original episode is still scheduled to air on Wednesday. In the upcoming episode "Caged Heat," Sam, Dean, and Castiel (Misha Collins) team up with Meg (Rachel Miner) to try to get Sam's soul back from Crowley. Spoiler alert: it doesn't work. Dean doesn't want to give up, though -- and he's about to make a deal with someone much more powerful, and more dangerous, than Meg. In "Appointment in Samarra," Dean goes looking for one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse: Death himself, who met Dean at a pizza joint last season to help him conquer Lucifer. Death (returning guest star Julian Richings) offers to help, but he's looking for a day off. He tells Dean that he'll help return Sam's soul if Dean spends a day working as Death. Where's Sam while all of this is going down? Unsurprisingly, Sam has been lying to Dean about wanting his soul back at all. He decides he's not interested in what having a soul entails - namely, human suffering, empathy, and heartbreak - and while Dean is making an extraordinary sacrifice, Sam seeks out Balthazar (Sebastian Roche). Balthazar knows a spell to keep Sam's soul permanently out of his body, but it requires the blood of Sam's father. Since John Winchester is long dead -- and his body was burned on a pyre -- Sam decides that Bobby (Jim Beaver) is the next best option. The title of the episode references an old folktale, in which a merchant in Baghdad tells his servant to go to the market and pick up supplies. When the servant returns, he's shaken, and tells the merchant that in the marketplace, Death bumped into him and made a threatening gesture. Terrified, the servant decides to flee Baghdad, and he borrows the merchant's horse to rush to Samarra, where he believes Death won't find him. Meanwhile, the merchant goes to the marketplace to speak to Death and asks why she threatened the servant. She tells him, "I wasn't threatened. I was simply surprised to see him in Baghdad, as I have an appointment with him tonight in Samarra." What do you think, "Supernatural" fans? Is Dean making a bad call with this Deal? Will he be able to handle playing Death for a day, if he's doing it for Sam? Meanwhile, just how much of Bobby's blood is needed for this shady spell of Sam's -- will Bobby survive the drain? Can Sam trust Balthazar's instructions? And, perhaps most importantly, what will happen when Dean finds out what Sam's been up to, and vice-versa? The Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer is recovering from surgery to replace both of his hips. Joel, 61, underwent surgery last week to correct a congenital condition and is "doing extremely well," his spokeswoman tells People. Joel toured earlier this year, but he's been slowed by the condition in his hips -- he's been walking with a cane in recent weeks -- and opted to have them both replaced in one operation. There's no word yet on when he'll be able to perform again. We wish him a smooth recovery. The filmmaker posted a first-look photo to the official "Twilight Saga" Facebook fan page Thursday (Nov. 25) with the following message: "Happy Thanksgiving and a crazy Black Friday to all of you and yours." Spoilers! If you haven't read the books and don't know what's in store for Bella, it's best to stop reading now. As you can see, the pic is of an arm amongst some scattered feathers, but it's much more than that, right? As we know from the books, Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Rob Pattinson) are officially married and go on their honeymoon at the beginning of "Breaking Dawn." What we see is the aftermath of that honeymoon night because Bella, being human and all, is quite fragile when it comes to Edward's vampire strength and stony flesh. There's some pain involved, and well ... feather pillows are destroyed. We actually have to commend Condon on this pic because even though it's a big fat tease -- would it hurt to see some R-Patz nudity? -- it tells us so much. Well played, Bill. In the upcoming episode "Caged Heat," Meg is back to her old tricks. She's still being portrayed by returning guest star Rachel Miner - though in the past she's appeared as Nicki Aycox and even Jared Padalecki when she possessed Sam in Season 2. For once, Sam's lack of a soul is coming in handy. Meg kidnaps the Winchesters, but while Dean (Jensen Ackles) panics, Sam remains calm enough to see through Meg's act. He even finds the whole thing funny. "She can't do jack squat. She's totally screwed. Look at her, Dean. She's furious. If she could kill you, she'd have done it by now. She's running." Sam deduces that Meg is on the run from the newest King of Hell, their good friend Crowley. Now that he's in charge, Crowley isn't too fond of the demons who think Lucifer should be in the position of power. While we're psyched to see Meg again - we always love a returning character - it's starting to bug us that she always gets the jump on our boys so easily. Isn't it about time they finish her off? We just didn't figure it would be this way. Braff kinda-sorta makes an appearance in Wednesday's (Nov. 24) episode, and you can see it (along with the return of the cul-de-sac crew's pantomime murder-suicide) in the first clip below. The primary focus of the episode (called "When the Time Comes") is Thanksgiving -- and specifically Jules' (Courteney Cox) attempts to make the holiday romantic when she says "I love you" and Grayson (Josh Hopkins) doesn't reciprocate. The rest of the gang doesn't really think Thanksgiving can be made sexy, which is the subject of the second clip. Also, Travis (Dan Byrd) brings his roommate Kevin (LaMarcus Tinker) home for the holiday, giving him his first prolonged exposure to the crew -- and, we're hoping, a better understanding of why Trav is the way he is. Dexter is closing in on everybody. In Sunday's (Nov. 28) episode "In the Beginning," everyone is getting closer to either the truth, capturing their prey or showing their hand. Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) and Quinn (Desmond Harrington) confront Jordan Chase (Jonny Lee Miller) about his missing head of security and his apparent lack of concern. It's fun to watch Deb because she's not one to hide her feelings, and Jordan definitely is feeling defensive. Don't poke the bear, Deb! Who knows who he'll take his anger out on next. At least she's not his "type." Speaking of "type," Lumen (Julia Stiles) has noticed that Emily Birch -- she of the blood necklace -- looks similar to her and the other victims. Is Dexter (Michael C. Hall) right? Despite surviving, could Birch be the first victim? "In the Beginning" makes sense now in a twisted way. "How is she still alive?" Yeah, we really can't wait to learn this full backstory. Meanwhile, Deb has come across videos of the victims. We don't know how she even gets through one of them. We love her take on things "They f***ing poke each other on Facebook," and the conclusion she draws about what's been happening to the missing men. Deb really is one of the most resilient characters.

Let's give thanks this holiday season that The Walking Dead will air its penultimate episode of the season on Sunday, Nov. 28 at 10 p.m. ET. Sadly, Andrea (Laurie Holden) is not celebrating after the loss of her sister Amy (Emma Bell) in that incredibly horrific zombie attack (we're still jumping at shadows). We really can't blame her, but the sad reality is that she needs to move on and "deal with" her sister's body. We don't think that there's necessarily a risk of Amy becoming a walker -- she just died from her wounds, and didn't come down with a fever -- but we could be wrong about how the zombie mythology works in this series. But it would be difficult to see Amy added to the zombie attack barbecue that's going on. Let's hope no one else in the group loses anyone we've come to know. Somehow we don't think anyone's safe. We're talking about President Bartlet (Martin Sheen) of"The West Wing" of course, although we're sure Obama isn't above seeking help during the holidays either. On a special Thanksgiving-themed episode of "The West Wing," Bartlet discovers the Butterball Turkey Talk-Line (1-800-BUTTERBALL), which Charlie (Dule Hill) calls the "Butterball hotline." "God, I love my country," says Bartlet. We agree. The president then proceeds to call and stay on hold until he reaches a helpful poultry expert and then asks some tricky questions about stuffing. Our favorite line about whether or not cooking stuffing inside a turkey could kill his guests: "I'm not saying that's necessarily a deal-breaker." We also dug up a couple other clips from the episode. Here CJ (Allison Janney) annoys the boys. Oh, and Toby (Richard Schiff) is wrong. Jamestown was settled in 1607, which also makes it the 17th century. It seems like I'm saying that just about every week, but "Chuck" is on a huge roll of late. Last week's minor letdown aside, the show has been piling excellent on top of excellent for at least a month. We have to start with the giant blonde she-male -- er, Sarah (actually, the overplaying of that joke was one of the few bum notes in this episode) and her "Kickboxer"/"Ong Bak"/"Bloodsport"/pick your favorite martial-arts movie fight in Thailand. We haven't seen this much Sarah Walker awesomeness in one episode in a long time, and watching her pretty much obliterate any and all in her path gave a huge jolt of adrenaline to the episode -- and the fight choreography in the "Kickboxer" sequence was expert. The awesomeness also came from the non-butt-kicking aspects of Yvonne Strahovski's performance. She got to play Sarah going through a full range of emotions: ruthless and slightly scary (Casey even invokes the name of her former boss, Langston Graham, in commenting on her hell-bent attitude) when dealing with the unfortunate Thai functionary, scared and forlorn after finding out about Chuck's proposal plan and finally, gut-wrenchingly committed to saving the man she loves, Intersect or no Intersect. Really great stuff from her this week. That climactic scene with Sarah rescuing Chuck from the perils of Phase Three -- having his mind wiped to get to the Intersect, essentially -- was tear-inducing. Sarah's opened up a ton since she and Chuck formally became a couple, but to see her so nakedly reveal her emotions was a shade we hadn't really seen from Sarah before, and it played beautifully. The way the show portrayed Chuck's mind being wiped away also worked well -- the dream images while the Belgian and his doctor tried to locate the Intersect were just real enough to give them a real impact. We kind of wonder why Chuck didn't have any side effects from the mind-wipe, but that may just be one of those "Chuck" things we have to let go. While Sarah was beating up half of Thailand searching for Chuck (with Casey and Morgan not far behind), the B-story held up its end both comedically and otherwise. Ellie finds the computer in her dad's Mustang, but she and Awesome are unable to get it working -- and she's about to start a 36-hour shift at the hospital. Awesome professes himself to be not very good with the tech stuff -- wait, there's something Awesome isn't awesome at? -- so enter Jeff and Lester. Actually, enter the whole Buy More crew, who use Awesome's devotion to Ellie (and to completing a task on time) as a way to extract free medical care for all manner of gnarly conditions. Lester does at least get the machine (a Roark 7, if you're keeping score) to start up, but it's password-protected with the prompt "Knock, knock." The password isn't "Who's there" but "I'm here," which is the way Ellie used to mess up the knock-knock joke. She enters the password, says "Oh my god," and ... We'll see next week. Curse you, "Chuck" writers! One thing, though: I (and many others) assumed the computer was a new Intersect, but based on Ellie's reaction it doesn't look that way. Chris Fedak told us that big things are in store for Chuck's big sister, but that might be a little bit too big a way to draw her into Chuck-world. The answer to that question will (presumably) come next week. This week, though, was one big bucket of excellent. Right? Tell us what you thought in the comments. "I'm working for Crowley, aren't I?" Sam argues. But we can't blame Dean for being skeptical. Maybe it's just Sam's cold expression, but it's hard for us to believe him. After all he's been through in his life -- a rough childhood, a dead girlfriend, and the whole Lucifer's vessel thing -- maybe having no feelings at all is a bit of a relief. He's felt plenty already. The standard Winchester whiskey heart-to-heart (or, in this case heart-to-cold-shell-of-a-heart) is interrupted when Sam suddenly vanishes into thin air. You'd think Dean would be used to this with Castiel, but he draws his gun anyway, and finds Sam passed out on the floor in another room. Ruh-roh. What are your thoughts, "Supernatural" fans?
