'Vikings' Ending After Season 6

Midnight

History confirmed today that Vikings will be coming to an end after its already-announced sixth season. The news comes well over a year since the veteran drama was last renewed, though a premiere date for its final run has yet to be announced.

The series has been a resounding success for the cable network. Since its debut in 2013 as History's first scripted original series, the show has been earning consistent critical acclaim while becoming a Top 5 drama on ad-supported cable with strong viewership in key demographics.

Inspired by the epic sagas about the trading and exploring Norsemen of early medieval Scandinavia, the Irish/Canadian co-production focuses on legendary Viking chieftain Ragnar Lodbrok, who was known for raiding France and England with his longships, and eventually becoming the king of Denmark and Sweden.

Vikings is currently airing its fifth season, with four episodes remaining until its season finale later this month on January 30. While production is said to be complete on its sixth and final season, a premiere date has yet to be penciled in.

While the end of Vikings is in sight, fans may be interested to learn that there is talk of a possible new series in the future from the same team that would continue the franchise. Everything is in the very early stages at this point, so any official word will likely come at a much later date.
