The team repair a microscope that once belonged to a pioneeringscientist and is now in the hands of a keen youngster wishingto use it once again. Elsewhere in the barn, there arerestoration jobs on a pair of well-worn war boots thataccompanied a captured soldier during the Second World War andan abstract sculpture that links a mother and daughter. OnWill's list is the substantial repair of a swinging bench fromIndia that threatens to collapse the next time it's saton.Arriving first are eight-year-old Felix and his dad Sam fromHertfordshire. They have broughtwith them a microscope handeddown from Felix's great-grandfather John D Bernal. Felix has akeen interest in science, perhaps unsurprising considering hisgreat-grandfather was a pioneering figure in the field ofcrystallography and helped pave the way for the scientists whodiscovered the double-helix structure of DNA. But despiteFelix's enthusiasm, he won't currently be making anydiscoveries as the microscope, dated 1890, no longer works.Optics expert Richard Biggs diagnoses the key problem: themicroscope is missing a crucial lens. He must also restore thereflective mirror that illuminates the glass slides.CobblerDean Westmoreland has an appointment with Malcolm, who isentrusting him with a very special pair of boots that saw hislate father Jack through some very difficult wartime years andbeyond. Jack was captured in Norway before seeing any combatand spent five years as a prisoner of war. His diaries, whichMalcolm still has, detail the horrific conditions that Jackand his fellow soldiers endured including periods of starvationand freezing winters. When Jack eventually returned home, theboots came with him, but the heel has worn down, thestitching is falling apart and the moths have attacked the feltuppers.Next to arrive is Krishna from Hertfordshire. She'shoping that woodwork maestro Will Kirk can repair a swingingbench that has been in her family for over 120 years. Thebench, a traditional item of furniture from Gujarat in WestIndia, belonged to Krishna's great-grandfather, and sheremembers it being in family members' homes as a child inIndia. When Krishna had cancer, the bench was a sanctuarywhere she could recover from her chemotherapy sessions. But nowits joints are loose and precarious, and the whole structurethreatens to break if sat upon. Will's plan includesdismantling the entire bench so he can assess which parts needto be replaced and remade, and he enlists Sonnaz Nooranvary torestuff the upholstery. Finally, Maria has a unique challengefor ceramics expert Kirsten Ramsay. She has brought in ahandcrafted sculpture made by her mother Betina, an artistfrom Buenos Aires, Argentina. The marble sculpture is thefirst in a triptych of works depicting a growing organicobject, and it's a work of which Betina was particularlyproud. However, when brought to the UK, it split from itswooden base, with pieces sheared off the sculpture itself. It's a tricky repair, so Kirsten calls in Dom to assist.

The team breathe new life into a military bugle that is farfrom fit for parade, a portable radio that once filled a hairsalon with musical memories, a Big Ben-shaped clockpainstakingly built from matchsticks, and a pair of children'sshoes that represent a family's story of survival.Arrivingfirst are Nicky and veteran Billy, who have brought with thema military bugle that once belonged to Nicky'sgreat-grandfather. The bugle has seen better days, with aplethora of dents and dinks along its once-shiny surface. Billywas in the army for 20 years before contracting a virus thatleft him blind. Now he wants the bugle brought back to acondition that's fit for parade and the role it still serves inhis work at a blind veteran's rehabilitation centre inLlandudno. On experienced cobbler Dean Westmoreland's to-do listis the restoration of a pair of children's shoes that are over75 years old. The leather boots belong to 83-year-old Nechamafrom Tel Aviv. They were her first ever pair, given to her byher parents, who left Eastern Europe in the 1930s as Hitlerrose to power, and they are a poignant reminder of the toughtimes the family endured during the 1940s.Next to arrive isCharlotte, with a unique replica model of Big Ben made almostentirely from matchsticks. The model, measuring just over fivefeet, was handed down to Charlotte from her grandmotherBarbara, who in turn inherited it from her artist father EdwinAldous, who painstakingly built it in 1953 to commemorateQueen Elizabeth's coronation. The final restoration falls toelectronics whizz Mark Stuckey, who must disassemble andrepair a Russian-built portable radio brought in by hairdresserKarl. It belonged to his father Enoch, a pioneer of BlackBritish hairdressing, who owned numerous salons andhairdressing schools from the 1970s onwards. For Karl and hisbrothers, the radio brings back vivid memories of theirfather's shop, where he would sing along to his favouritesongs and entertain customers.

The team restores four precious heirlooms, including apainting belonging to a Ukrainian family who risked everythingto conserve their family history in the face of unimaginableodds. Also in the barn is an original 1963 calendar fromLiverpool's Cavern Club featuring an early Beatles booking, an18ft self-built kayak and a leather swivel chair that evokesprecious memories of a much-missed father and grandfather.Thefirst arrival is for paintings conservator Lucia Scalisi. Mariahas brought a 19th-century Madonna and Child painting thatoriginally hung in a Ukrainian village church where her familylived. During the Second World War it was rolled up and hiddenin her grandmother's coat just before she was taken to a forcedlabour camp in northern Germany with her two daughters. Luciahas her work cut out as cracks have appeared where the paintingwas hastily folded and stored. Maria hopes to one day returnthe restored painting to its original home in the Ukrainianvillage church.Dom has his own challenge when a two-personkayak, originally built from a kit in the 1960s, arrivesmeasuring 18ft. It was built by owner Stephen's father and wasthe focal point for him and his brother Nigel's childhoodholiday memories. Being so large it has been stored outside andthe years have taken their toll, completely rotting throughthe original wooden deck and blistering the fibreglasshull.Peter, son of Ray McFall the original owner ofLiverpool's legendary Cavern Club, brings in an item for theattention of paper restorer Angelina Bakalarou. It's a wallcalendar from 1963 used to book in bands at the venue. Itrecords the dates of all the bands who played at the clubduring 1963, including The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.Thefinal item of the day is for upholsterer Sonnaz Nooranvary whenJoelle and her children arrive with a broken office swivelchair. It belonged to Herall, Joelle's father, who would playwith his grandchildren spinning them around in it.
