As DCI Butcher moves closer to charging the estranged husbandof the family killed at the picnic, Jack and Nikki join DSGuillam in search of the truth. The team begin to realise theymay have been looking down the wrong end of the telescope, andtheir lives are thrown into mortal danger. Soon enough, theyare thrust into an unexpected and depraved world, and furthermurders are discovered. Jack and Nikki must fight to escape andbring those responsible to justice. Meanwhile, Amy's darkpast begins to catch up with her and she must decide whether tokeep it buried or confront it head-on, risking her medicalcareer and everything else in order to escape her demons. Amy'snightmare and the Lyell's investigation begin to converge. Andwhen the crimes are linked to people in very high places, theteam experience the difficulty of bringing the rich andpowerful to justice.

The Lyell team investigate the clinical shooting of a mother,stepfather and son by the River Malt, to determine who killedthis picnicking family and why. The investigation soon turns tothe female victim's estranged husband. The couple were in themiddle of a bitter and acrimonious divorce, and records keptby the deceased show that the husband has a propensity forviolence. Working on the case is local detective MalcolmGuillam, about to retire and haunted by the death of a youngwoman near the River Malt ten years ago. When the present daymurder brings back memories of the unsolved case, Guillam seesan opportunity to redeem himself. But leading the investigationis DCI Butcher, who is certain the estranged husband isresponsible for the murder, and has little time for Guillam'sperceived trip down memory lane. Meanwhile, registrar Amy isadvancing in her surgical career when news of the River Maltshooting brings back memories of the same incident that hauntsDS Guillam. Attempting to bury her past, Amy is unwillinglypulled back into the same world that caused the death of herfriend ten years ago and forced to confront the high-poweredpeople she has been trying desperately to forget.
