Ray Combs began his professional career as a stand-up comedian in the 1980s and eventually signed as the host of the revival of the game show Family Feud, but the 1990s Family Feud host was plagued by personal demons in the last years of his life. In 1994, a car accident nearly paralyzed him, leaving him in constant pain, then business problems followed, also his house was repossessed, and then he split with his wife. Committed to a psychiatric ward in June 1996, Combs hung himself in his hospital room closet by wrapping his bed sheet around a bar that was specifically designed to break away during suicide attempts, but it strangely did not. He died June 2, 1996 at the age of 40.
