HBO announced today that Game of Thrones will be returning for an eighth and final season. It has been well over a year since we learned that the cable network was planning to end the fantasy saga after Season 8, and now we have an official confirmation that the series will indeed be coming to a close.
HBO has ordered six episodes for the show's final run, which will not return until sometime in 2019. Series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are among the writers and directors slated for the final season. Acclaimed director Miguel Sapochnik, who won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series in 2016, will also be returning behind the camera.
The adaptation of George R.R. Martin's fantasy drama has been a massive hit for HBO, and after eight seasons will be going out on top, as its ratings will surely be strong over its final six episodes. No premiere date has been set for Season 8, but it will be at least a year until we find out how the story will end.
