AFTER THE HURRICANE – As Hurricane Helene strikes Floridathis week, Sharyn Alfonsi reports on the difficult aftermathof another storm in the Sunshine State. In 2022, whenHurricane Ian ripped through Florida, it left behind anestimated 3 billion dollars of damage, and a long trail oflitigation. After a year-long investigation, Alfonsi findsthat an estimated 50,000 homeowners affected by Ian are stillfighting with their insurance companies to repair or rebuildtheir homes. Alfonsi interviews insurance insiders andwhistleblowers, who are licensed damage adjusters who workedclaims during Ian. They say that several insurance carrierswere in some cases using materially altered damage reports thatresulted in dramatically lower claim payouts. They say that,after years of dutifully paying premiums, impacted homeownersmay not even know if their damage reports were altered. Floridahas opened a criminal investigation, but so far, no arrestshave been made. Oriana Zill de Granados is theproducer.
