TV Land announced today that Younger has been renewed for a sixth season. The good news comes on the eve of the Season 5 premiere, ensuring at least one more year on the air for the veteran dramedy.
The half-hour series stars Sutton Foster as Liza, a 40-year-old single mother who pretends to be in her 20's after struggling to get back into the working world. Her lie helps her land a job at a publishing firm, but it also starts to complicate matters in her personal life.
Look for Season 6 of Younger in mid-2019.
FX announced today that Legion has been picked up for a third season. The good news comes with two episodes remaining in the superhero drama's sophomore run, which comes to a close on June 12.
Legion is one the latest Marvel Comics-based entries on television and was the first of its kind on a cable network, after other Marvel-based fare found success in recent years on both broadcast TV and Netflix. While its viewership took a hit in Season 2, the show continued to garner widespread critical acclaim for its unique take on the genre.
The series follows a man diagnosed with schizophrenia who comes to realize that the voices he hears and the visions he sees are the result of him actually being a mutant. Now working with a team of specialists, he is able to explore an extraordinary new world of possibilities.
Look for Season 3 of Legion in 2019.
Just two months after picking up Roseanne for an 11th season, ABC has reversed the move. The cancellation comes after show star Roseanne Barr took to Twitter with a series of racist and anti-semitic posts. The most offending being a now-deleted tweet calling adviser to former President Barack Obama, Valerie Jarrett, an offspring of the “Muslim Brotherhood & Planet of the Apes.”
The backlash that followed was immediate and intense, with numerous celebrities and pundits speaking out against her remarks. Barr subsequently apologized, calling the tweet a joke, but it was too late. The damage had been done.
Comedian Wanda Sykes was the first person involved with the show to make a move, announcing her departure from writing on Season 2 this morning. But that was just the beginning, as mere hours later, ABC Entertainment chief Channing Dungey announced that the network was cancelling the show due to her "abhorrent, repugnant" words that were "inconsistent with our values."
The decision was obviously not made lightly, as Roseanne's comeback was the biggest success story ever for a revived series. The show's Season 10 premiere in March surpassed all expectations by drawing a massive audience of 18 million viewers with an impressive 5.2 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic. Those numbers are almost unheard of nowadays, especially for broadcast comedies.
But now instead of going on another likely-lengthy run, Roseanne's revival ends after just nine episodes, with the now-series finale airing one week ago.
Fans of The Expanse can breathe a sigh of relief tonight, as Amazon has saved the critically-acclaimed space opera from cancellation. While rumored for a few days now, the official announcement came tonight directly from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos at the National Space Society's International Space Development Conference in Los Angeles.
The outpouring from fans was quite substantial after they got wind that Syfy was passing on a fourth season of their favorite show. A #SaveTheExpanse campaign quickly gained momentum, including an online petition with over 130,000 signatures and a GoFundMe page which paid for an airplane banner that was flown over Amazon Studios in Santa Monica.
While revivals are still not overly common, the list of shows being brought back is growing at a rate never seen before. The speed of the decisions is also faster than ever. The Expansetook only two weeks to be saved, while earlier this month NBC revived comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine just one day after it was cancelled by Fox.
Season 3 of The Expanse on Syfy is just about half-way through its run, with the finale set for late June.
Syfy announced today that freshman drama Krypton has been picked up for a second season. The good news comes ahead of tomorrow's season finale.
The Superman prequel premiered in March with a 10-episode run that, despite mixed reviews, fared well for the cable network. The show has been averaging 1.8 million viewers (Live+3), making it Syfy's most-watched new series in four years.
Set on the titular planet 200 years before the birth of Kal-El, aka Superman, Krypton follows his grandfather Seg-El. He is the son of a disgraced scientist whose time travel research has cost the family their standing in society. With the House of El having fallen from grace, a power struggle ignites between the planet's elite classes. Things get worse when a hero arrives from the future with bad news regarding the family's bloodline.
Look for Season 2 of Krypton in 2019.
It is being reported that The Last Ship will conclude after its upcoming fifth season. The news, while surely disappointing to fans, at least gives those awaiting the show's fate an update on its status. It has been more than a year-and-a-half since the show was last picked up for Seasons 4 and 5 within a one-month span.
TNT's move to end the veteran series was somewhat expected, as those close to the show appear to have known its fate for some time. The most-telling info came last fall from Travis Van Winkle, who plays Danny, when he posted a since-deleted message on his Instagram account referring to a "series wrap".
While today's news is surely sad for The Last Ship's loyal fans, they can at least take solace that the show will get a satisyfing conclusion to its storyline, as its impending end was clearly known well ahead of time.
Look for the final season to premiere later this year.
Freeform announced today that Siren has been renewed for a second season. The freshman series is off to a solid start, with its March premiere ranking it as the #1 new cable drama among young women.
The network has ordered 16 episodes for the show's sophomore run, which is a considerable increase over the 10 it received in Season 1.
Siren follows the residents of Bristol Cove, a coastal fishing town where a legend exists that it was once home to mermaids. The folklore is proven true when a mysterious girl named Ryn arrives, wreaking havoc that results in a battle between the town's residents and these predatory beings who wish to reclaim their right to the sea.
Two episodes remain in the show's first season, with the finale set to air on Thursday, May 24.
ABC announced today that Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been picked up for a sixth season. The good news comes as the network is making last-minute decisions on its lineup for the 2018-2019 television season.
The veteran drama has had a solid run on the network overall, reaching the impressive 100-episode milestone earlier this year. The series has been on the bubble come renewal time in recent years, though, as its current ratings are far from what they used to be. However, the series benefits from its international appeal and its ability to tie-in with movie franchises within the Marvel universe.
Look for Season 6 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to premiere in the 2018-2019 season.
Netflix announced today that Lost in Space has been renewed for a second season. The pickup comes a month following the release of the drama's freshman run, which has so-far been receiving mixed review from critics.
A re-imagining of the 1960s series of the same name, Lost in Space follows a future where Planet Earth is in crisis, and the Robinson family journeys to space with hopes of writing a new chapter in human history. But when their spacecraft crashes on a mysterious frozen planet, the family faces unknown dangers as they fight for their lives to escape.
Look for Season 2 of Lost in Space in 2019.
Fox announced today that Batman prequel Gotham has been renewed for a fifth and final season. The DC Comics-based drama, which follows the beginnings of the infamous city and all of its villains, has been a solid performer for the network over the course of its run.
In Season 4, viewers started seeing a young Bruce Wayne masquerading as a masked vigilante to fight crime in the city. The final season of the origin story will further follow his transformation into the caped crusader.
While each of the show's previous seasons has been 22 episodes in length, it is being reported that a shorter 13-episode run is being considered to conclude the series. Look for the final chapter of Gotham to premiere during the 2018-2019 season, likely as a mid-season entry.
